Environment
Successful inclusion exists in an environment with the following conditions:
- Administrators and teachers are philisophically committed to meeting the needs of all students .
- Administrators and teachers need to know and understand why a student with exceptionalities is placed into the regular classroom.
- A sufficient amount of time is taken to think about and plan for the diverse needs of each student.
- Involvment of the home, the school, the district, the community, and even businesses (in helping to create a healthy transition from school to the work force) is important.
- Exceptional student and regular education teachers work collaboratively to assess, teach, and monitor student progress.
- Teachers should be provided information, orientation, and training, but not explicit orders on how they must involve students with exceptionalities; therefore, allowing flexibility for the individuality of all students.
- The education and training of teachers needs to be continuously updated and evaluated.
- It is necessary to have resources from adequate funding and appropriate physical space for the specialized technology, equipment, and materials.
- Students should be encouraged to communicate with each other (ex. such as in asking for or providing help with assignments).
