Laboratory 7
Conducting an Experiment

Learning Objectives:

 Materials and Apparatus Needed

  1. Apparatus to measure memory
  2. Microcomputers with SPSS connections.
  3. APA Style Manual.

 Directions: (Work in your teams on this project.)

This lab allows to to pose and test hypotheses about the memory.

A. Review the concept of working memory with your team.  You may find some useful information on this internet site. http://psych.athabascau.ca/html/aupr/demos.shtml

B. With your teammates make a new hypothesis about memory.  Design an post-test only between group experiment to test your hypothesis. Remember to make an informed consent form and to use a random assignment strategy.. You must test at least five participants in each condition. (You may leave lab in order to do this. Plan to return to lab by 4:00.)  You must include your instructor in the sample as the first participant. Define the dependent variable on at least an ordinal scale.

C. Collect the data in as controlled a setting as possible.

D. Analyze the data using the SPSS software.  Calculate the measures of central tendency, dispersion for each group. Compute the appropriate inferential statistic. You had a between subjects design, threfore  use a t-test for independent groups. 

E. Report your method and results using APA style.  There is no lab report form for this lab. You may find this Internet resources helpful:
